There is a deep silence in me today. Partly it is the aftermath of four days of intense poetry immersion at Dodge.
In past years, I've returned home from the poetry festival utterly unable to write for being so filled. This is not a bad thing. I also know that the experiences and the words will find a settling place in my soul and there, will transform my writing once more.
No, this silence, this stillness is also the aftermath of loss. My friend's husband was laid to rest yesterday.
My friend and their son are bereft.
I keep returning to the memory of Galway Kinnell reading Rilke's Duino Elegies. The profound sadness of loss and the ecstatic celebration of living.
This is where I am today.
