We marked the solstice with a bonfire in the backyard. I had to tromp through the permafrost left from our last snowfall to get to the woodpile and clear a space around the outdoor firepit we use in the summer. Each of us wrote our wishes for the year on scraps of paper that we folded and threw into the fire. I stood, watching while our breath mingled with the smoke from our wishes and dispersed into the night sky. The next day the light returned and with it a measure of clarity.
Tonight is the first night of Hanukah and we will once again use light to celebrate a victory over spiritual darkness.
How ever you celebrate the light's return, may you find clarity and joy.
