One of the interesting things about being an artist of any stripe
(and I include any creative endeavor here, though I’ll talk most about
writing), is the tension between competence and experimentation. There
is something marvelously freeing about being a beginner in something. I
think of the workshops I’ve conducted with young elementary school
writers and the wildly bold work they produce when they don’t have the
pressure of making something ‘perfect’ or living up to some artificial
expectation for themselves.
